Urban Dance
Urban Dance is a dance style and culture that developed outdoors, mainly in streets.
The term is used to describe all the dances in the urban context. The dances are often improvised and of social nature, promoting the interaction and the contact with spectators and other dancers. They form a part of the culture of the geographical zone where they come from, Brooklyn.
The first dance associated with the culture is Break Dance, that appeared in New York in the 70´s and it became a fundamental element of urban culture. Break Dance, Locking and Popping are now considered as “Old School” styles. In the 90´s, the evolution of Hip Hop music took new ways and new styles of dance. New styles started to appear that were disociating themselves of Break Dance. They are called “New School” styles.
Nowadays, Urban Dance is developing in many different directions, influenciated mainly with the constant changes in Hip Hop music and the masive influation of the media. Even if its origins are not like that, all Urban Dances are trained in academies all over the world
